185 years ago, a Chigasaki fisherman found and returned a sacred object of worship to Samukawa. It had been lost in a river as the people of Samukawa carried their portable shrine back to Samukawa. Ever since that fisherman's deed, the people of Samukawa have carried their portable shrine once a year to the beach in Chigasaki to perform a purification ritual. Tsurumine Shrine had celebrated a similar tradition for hundreds of years and in 1923, Tsurumine and Samukawa began performing the ritual together. Now, as a result of the actions of one fisherman, there are 40 shrines participating in this Hamaori Festival every July.
